Abstract

Seismic resilience is crucial for safeguarding existing infrastructure, especially in earthquake-prone regions. Many older buildings, designed without modern seismic standards, remain vulnerable to significant damage during seismic events. This paper systematically reviews seismic retrofitting techniques, specifically focusing on the use of Geopolymer and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) materials, which have gained attention for their potential in enhancing structural integrity. Traditional retrofitting methods, such as reinforced concrete jacketing and steel bracing, have been widely used but come with challenges like added weight and high labor costs. Conversely, GFRP and Geopolymer materials offer advantages like high strength-to-weight ratios, corrosion resistance, and environmental sustainability, making them promising alternatives. This review evaluates the effectiveness of these materials by comparing them with conventional methods, using performance metrics like lateral load resistance, ductility, and energy dissipation. The study synthesizes empirical findings from experimental tests and numerical simulations, focusing on the structural, economic, and environmental benefits of these modern techniques. Additionally, the research explores the potential for cost savings, installation ease, and long-term durability, highlighting the promise of GFRP and Geopolymer as sustainable solutions for seismic retrofitting. By mapping the progress of seismic retrofitting practices, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the advantages and limitations of these materials, guiding future research and applications in enhancing the seismic resilience of aging infrastructure.
