Abstract

Sustainable aquaculture in Uttar Pradesh (UP) has grown rapidly over the last decade, driven by state schemes (farm-pond construction, training) and national Blue Revolution programs. While production gains (notably a 26.4% rise in UP fish output reported for 2023–24) improved livelihoods, intensification has produced water-quality, nutrient-loading, and biodiversity pressures. This paper reviews sustainable practices (IMTA, improved feed management, effluent treatment, pond polyculture, climate-smart measures), synthesizes regional literature up to 2024, outlines a mixed-methods methodology for assessing environmental impacts and farmer adoption in UP, presents representative results (water-quality and adoption summaries), discusses trade-offs, and offers policy and practice recommendations for scaling low-impact aquaculture in the state.
